The video below shows a Hyspecs custom built commercial 30 tonne log splitter with integral conveyor. Hyspecs sales engineers designed the system with a Galtech double gear pump, unloader valve and auto kick out valve. So much easier than wielding an axe!
The log splitter parts can be sized to suit portable petrol engine units, tractor PTO set-ups and electric motors. When designing your log splitter take into consideration the throughput you would like to achieve. The more horsepower you have, the faster you will be able to split the wood. Don't be fooled by firms advertising massive tonnages of cutting force. You could achieve this with a tiny 1 HP motor. However the cylinder would have to be huge, the pump small and it would take you all day to split a few pieces!
A 5 HP petrol unit can be suited for use with Briggs and Stratton, Honda or Tecumseh type engines. A Bucher Hi-Low (2-stage) hydraulic pump that is designed to use the available horsepower in the most efficient manner with a fast approach at low pressure, and a slower splitting action at high pressure. In conjunction with the Bucher pump is a Brand log-splitting control valve that has a built in return function that allows the cylinder to return while the operator loads the next log.

• The low pressure cylinder extension time = approx 4 seconds

• The cylinder retraction time = approx 3 seconds
